Presentations
Presentations may be on any subject dealing with the biology and conservation of albatrosses and petrels (order Procellariiformes). Conference themes are not being pre-set but oral presentations will be grouped thematically into sessions whenever possible.
Offered papers will be accepted for delivery as oral presentations or as posters. The conference organizers will endeavour to meet the wishes of presenters in this regard, but it may be necessary to move some requests for orals to a poster session, depending on the number of oral presentations offered. Delegates will be informed if this transpires well in time for them to make posters.
Oral presentations will be allocated 20-25 minutes (depending on the number of oral presentations offered, exact length to be confirmed prior to the conference), of which five minutes will be reserved for questions. Daily keynote presentations will be both solicited and chosen from abstracts received, and will be accorded more time. Oral presentations should be illustrated to a high standard by the use of a data (multi-media) projector, not by photographic slides or by transparent overheads. All oral presentations must be made in English. Speakers are requested to take account of the multinational nature of the conference in making their presentations. No interpretation facilities will be available.
Posters should be made to a high quality in English, be in portrait not landscape format, and should not exceed 900 mm in height and 700 mm in width. They should include the authors’ names and affiliations, and a “head and shoulders” photograph and e-mail address of the first author. Poster preparers are encouraged to make page-sized (A4 preferred) colour copies of their posters available as hand-outs at poster sessions.
Abstracts
Abstracts should be submitted electronically as attached MSWord files to andreaangel.g@gmail.com by 31 May 2008. Abstracts received after this date might not appear bound in the abstracts booklet, but those left out will be made available loose-leaf - if received up to one week before the conference commences.
Abstracts should be written in English, using either American or English spelling, and the title, address and body of the text in total should not exceed half an A4 page in length. Please prepare abstracts in Times Roman using a size-12 font, following the style of Marine Ornithology (www.marineornithology.org). Include full postal addresses of all co-authors and the e-mail address of the senior author only. Include the scientific names of any species mentioned in the title and in the text. Do not include illustrations (pictures, tables, graphs) or cite references in your abstract. Abstracts will not be edited before their inclusion in the abstracts booklet, so they will likely appear exactly as you have prepared them. An example abstract is given below.
Abstracts should endeavour to summarize findings, and not just describe what the study set out to achieve.
Queries over presentations and abstracts may be sent to Andrea Angel at andreaangel.g@gmail.com.
Proceedings
It is intended to publish offered papers from the conference in a special edition of Marine Ornithology. Dr Ross Wanless (rosswanless@gmail.com) will be the guest editor. When submitting your abstract please state whether you wish your presentation to be considered for publication in the conference proceedings or not.
All received papers will undergo a standard review process and submission will not mean automatic acceptance. Papers for publication must be prepared in journal style and layout, following the “Instructions to Authors” on the journal’s web site (www.marineornithology.org). Electronic submission is required and all papers must be received by Ross Wanless by 30 September 2008. There will be no formal page limits set on submitted papers, but conciseness in writing is required. Delegates who plan to offer a paper for the proceedings should take the opportunity to discuss their plans with the editor at the conference.
All delegates to the conference will receive a copy of the Proceedings when printed as part of their conference fee.
Poster sessions
Posters should be erected at registration sessions held on either the afternoon/evening of Sunday 10th or early on Monday 11th (first day of conference) and should not be removed prior to midday on Friday 15th (last day of conference). Basic aids will be available to help delegates erect their posters on the boards to be provided. There will be one or more formal poster sessions when delegates will be expected to “stand by” their posters for core periods to aid in discussions. Further details on poster sessions will be available at registration.
Special sessions
Prospective delegates wishing to organize a special session or event (e.g. a special-interest workshop, round-table discussion, working group or committee meeting, video presentation, commercial display or demonstration, etc.) should contact the organizers (at andreaangel.g@gmail.com) well in advance of the conference (and no later than 31 May 2008). The Local Organizers will do the best they can to satisfy all requests in this regard, but it may not always be possible to meet all the desired requirements in terms of time slot, meeting room size, facilities, etc.
